Lab 2
Computer Cartography
Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!! All your friends and family
are planning on being there, however, your wife/husband's uncle Bob lives
way off in the boonies (I'll tell you where, everyone gets a different location). He has no clue where he
is in relation to the country, much less Seattle/Ellensburg. As you are
a professional cartographer, your wife/husband-to-be has insisted that
you make a map that will not only give him directions to Ellensburg, but
teach him a bit about the country. Being the wonderful husband/wife that
you are, you've decided to go nuts on this and create a two page, four
part map. As this is a cartographic exercise, not a GIS exercise, GIS
software or data may not be used. It is to be drafted in Corel Draw on
top of scanned images which are later to be deleted.
Map requirements:
Page 1
1) an outline map of the U.S. Show the location of Seattle, Ellensburg,
and uncle Bob's town (and the outlines of WA and Bob's state). The town
and state location of uncle Bob will be given individually during lab.
This should be relatively small (~1/4 page).
2) A map of the relevant Washington area (basically, SeaTac to Ellensburg),
including Seattle, the SeaTac airport, major landmarks, and the major
roads that will be required for Bob to get to Ellensburg. Provide considerable
detail (~3/4 of a page) - think about the trip, what Bob will see (assume a cloud-free day), and what he might want to know about what he sees.
Page 2
1) A map of the relevant Washington area (basically, SeaTac to Ellensburg),
including Seattle, the SeaTac airport, major landmarks, and the major
roads that will be required for Bob to get to Ellensburg. Keep this
short and simple (~1/4 page). In fact, this should be a smaller and simpler version of the large map on page 1.
2) A map of Ellensburg showing both the route to your house/dorm/apt.
and a few major roads (and landmarks, etc). Show enough detail to get Uncle Bob from the
interstate to your place. (~3/4 of a page).
Note, you may include minor text directions as a part of your maps.
Keep it simple.
When making these maps, assume Uncle Bob has never been to WA and will
want to know what it is that he sees from the road (another assumption,
and a rarer one, assume it's a nice, cloud-free day).
Remember neatlines, scale, a descriptive title, and your name. Make it
pretty, but use no color.
To Accomplish This:
1) Find appropriate hardcopy maps that you can scan. Or grab stuff from
MapQuest.com. Or wherever.
2) If all you can find is hardcopy, use the scanner in the back to scan
the maps as either tif or jpg files.
3) Use Corel Draw to do this lab- assume black and white only. No color.
4) Remember, I only want to see your work, so any scanned images you
use to trace over must be deleted.
5) Part of the grading will be on how good the instructions are and
how well your map conforms to what Uncle Bob would actually see.
6) Print it out on the laser printer. All you will hand in will be the
two printed maps.
