- letter spacing
- leading
- General guidelines
- Readability is the number one rule
- avoid fancy
- italics for water
- no more than two different fonts
- heirarchy
- critically examine
- spell check - typos interfere with communication and credibility.
- be consistent
- avoid overprinting
- guidelines - point features
- placement preference - location around the point
- do not allow other features to come between point and label
- text should never, ever be upside down.
- consistent justifications of text relative to point
- guidlines - linear features
- text above, close but not touching
- to wrap or not?
- always orient
- label long features multiple times
- guidelines - area features
- visually center
- consider all uppercase type
- if too small, label like points.
