1 July and 4 August
Date: Wednesday, October 15. Meet at trailhead (see map) at 12:20 PM. Wear hiking clothes (hiking boots or good sneakers)- it's a steep little trail. You should allow approximately 4 hours for this lab. Note - if you don't think you can physically make it, see me and we can work out something else.
Bring: notebook/clipboard/paper - something to take notes on/with. Binoculars if you have them. The most important item to bring is your keen and perceptive powers of observation. Oh yeah - and some water. And some sunscreen if you don't already have a good tan. Again - proper footwear!
As a group, we will hike to the top of Manastash ridge. Once there, you will look out over the valley/Ellensburg and take notes on what you see. These notes will include such things as physical features (relief, topography, geology, hydrology, climate), biological features (plants and animals), and cultural features (population, transportation, economic zones, service industries).
Writeup: After returning to CWU, you will complete a writeup of what you saw. The sooner you do this, the better - write while your memory is fresh!. Include an introduction (lead in paragraph) and summary/conclusion (wrap up paragraph). The writup should be 2 pages (1.5-2.5 pages), double spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins. This MUST be typed - no hand-written material will be accepted during this course (except in-class work and field notes). Sketches/maps/photos/diagrams/etc may not be part of the 2 page writeup, although these items can supplement your field notes if you wish.
Hand in: Your field notes and the final writeup.
Due date: Monday, 5 July (first hike). Thursday, 5 August (second hike).
Grading: 4% first trip, 6% second.
Some comments on the map: the School is Damman, and Uptanum Road may well be Damman Road to the east of the Yak(depends on whether you believe MapQuest or the local phone directory map).
